Welcome to Briar Bay Saanens. My venture into the dairy goats started in l976 with the purchase to 2 recorded grade saanens. That makes me a member of ADGA 43 years this coming January. My herd remains small. Milking 10 does is a lot for me.

The farm consists of 60 acres located an hour south of Dallas. We are in a remote area surrounded by ranch land, wild life, and seclusion. My bucks are located at the front of the farm as you turn of the highway. They run a 6 ½ acre pasture. They are always together unless it is breeding season, in which case they are loaded in the trailer and brought to the house for individual pens. The buck pasture is ½ mile from the house and the does. The does have a 30x50 barn and a smaller pasture than the bucks.

I practice a CAE negative program and test annually each January. My kids are hand raised at birth. I have a wireless intercom system in the barn which helps greatly in the kidding season. The kids remain on milk until 4 months old and remain away from the older stock until they freshen as yearlings. I generally do not wait until they are 2 year olds to freshen. I like to breed my kids at 90-100 lbs. The hay of choice for all the goats is a locally grown sudan. All are fed a pelleted grain called La Cuesta Milk Goat Pellets and are given a free choice mineral called Mighty Goat along with baking soda.

I participate in the ADGA Linear Program annually. I strive for those high scores (don’t we all) by bringing in quality bucks to breed to the does. I am a member of the National Saanen Breeders. I enjoy showing my goats. There are about 5-6 shows I participate in each year. For the past 30 years I , along with others, have promoted the Texas Saanen breeders. We hold Saanen Specialtys when we can. Our membership numbers around 30 with members not only in Texas but Mo.,Az.,Al.,Pa.,Wa.,Ar., and Nm. I have exported into Mexico and Turkey.

The highlite of my 43 years was at the 2010 Nationals this past summer. My three year old doe, CH Briar-Bay RTB Plumnellie won her class with BU 3 year old. Her full twin sister, Elfin Magic finished this her championship this year as well as CH Briar-BayW Encore , a 5 year old buck. There is a huge thank you to all my friends giving me the opportunity to have access to some exceptional bucks. Equally as exciting as Plumnellie winning her class at the 2010 Nationals, was the placing of her 2011 son, Briar-Bay WL Smilin' Jack into the family of dairy goats at the Redwood Hill Dairy in Sebastopol, Ca. And an exciting thing is this, Briar-Bay FF Girl On Fire AS1661165 has a daughter that resides at Redwood Hill Farm in California. She is Ranea Social Issues AS1801359. DOB: 3/1/2014 FS:93 EEEE 04/03 and a Top Ten Doe. Her photos can be found in the Buck Barn on Companeros Foxy Frosty’s page
